M. Night Shamalan's The Village

Today is Monday. That makes it dollar day in the video department at our local grocery store. Any movie is $1. I just got done watching The Village. I am still a bit unsure of what I think of the movie. I liked it up to the end. I am confused by the ending. It will require more thought. I don't mind spending a dollar, it's better than spending 20 for my husband and I to see one. We watched prices go from 4 per person matinee to 5.75. I find this offensive. 5.75 was the cost for us to see a movie at night when I was in high school. I graduated in 1995. In that short of years prices have inflated too much. They pay 'name' actors too much money. The name does not make the movie. The writing plus acting makes the movie. Writing bad=bad movie. Acting bad=bad movie. I have seen a few okay movies with unknowns that are better actors than the 'names'. I have seen good movies with 'known' actors kill the movie.
I discovered this writer/director with the movie Dreamcatcher. I don't watch horror movies, but the previews hinted at something that intrigued me. After seeing it, it made me hopeful we were back to the days that writers, directors, and actors were good enough to make a movie without resorting to blood and guts. I know, some movies need these things. They just over-do it. It makes it less scary, all that blood and guts. We are at our best when some things are left to our imaginations. It is scarier. Everyone visualizes something different.
I want The Village to be written into a book. There can be many more things added when writing a book. You can give more suspense and develop characters more fully. You can give a better 'visual'. A movie only allows so much time to develop things. Some things must go. I want to know what happens when Ivy tells whoever(I can't remember his name) that the 'monsters' aren't real. You know she will. This is why I didn't like the ending. She came back with medicine, THE END. Makes me want to pull my hair out. What decision was made with the village? Did anyone try to leave when they noticed she passed safely through the woods. Did they find Noah's body? Did anyone 'buy' the explanation? Someone had to go get it. It is forbidden to go there, but surely someone would ask the question.
This is why I never let anyone talk me out of seeing a movie I may be interested in. Everyone has different opinions. It's easier for me, if I didn't like the movie hell, I only payed a dollar for it. I seem to have a knack for being able to tell if the previews showed are pretty much the whole movie. I avoid most of these until my husband brings them home. He hasn't caught onto this idea yet. If you can tell the whole story in a 1 to 2 minute trailer, you shouldn't make the movie. You shouldn't charge people 10 dollars to see it. While I'm on this track, why do you allow people who can afford it see the movie for free? These high paid 'actors' go to premieres. For free, with door prizes. What a crock, we pay them (it is us, we are the ones who go watch them paying for it) and they get to see it for free. Even those who are not in the movie. Nothing to do with the movie. Apparently it is thought that if million/billionaires see a movie for free, the masses shall follow. UGH! People, have a mind of your own. I bet, if we quit paying to see these in the theatres they would quit paying outrageous money to 'name' actors. For $5 you and a group of friends can see a movie. For $10 per person you and a group of friends can see one with extra loud sound and a really big screen. I'm not really trying to tell anyone not to go to the theatre. If we did, a lot of people would lose their jobs. Minimum wage ones, but hey everyone needs a job. There are still many movies I wish to see, but I will wait for the video to come out, and be in on Monday. For those of us who have little spare money, it's our luxury. Theatres are out of the question.
